In the talk “Everything Is Appearance” (#25230, 2015‑08‑20), Yang Ning explains that The Star Road is a symbolic reading of the clear path to enlightenment laid out in the Shurangama Sutra. In this sense, The Star Road is not merely a science‑fiction story; it is a practice map, an allegorical journey that traces a cultivator’s complete process from initial resolve (accepting a mission), through the ordeals of inner and outer illusions (the realms of demons, Buddhas, and light), to breaking the fundamental attachment to a separate “self,” and finally realizing awakening for oneself and others by “sprinkling the water of merit.”
The story places particular emphasis on dismantling a double attachment: on the one hand, clinging to the appearance of spiritual practice itself (the “Buddha‑illusion”), and on the other, to desire and emotional obsession (the “demon‑illusion”). Only by letting go of both and embodying ultimate self‑sacrifice for the benefit of others does true accomplishment become possible.
